A total solar eclipse is not a single moment but a slow, escalating drama that plays out over a couple of hours, building to a couple of minutes that people describe as the most astonishing thing they have ever seen. Knowing the sequence in advance means you will recognise each stage as it happens instead of realising afterwards what you missed.

First contact — the eclipse begins (about 75 minutes before totality)
The Moon takes its first tiny bite out of the Sun's edge. Through eclipse glasses or a solar filter you will see a small notch appear and slowly grow. Nothing changes in the landscape yet — the Sun is so bright that even a partly covered Sun lights the world normally. This is a good time to check your gear and settle in.
The deepening partial (the hour before totality)
Over the next hour the crescent Sun narrows. Subtle, eerie changes begin roughly 15–20 minutes before totality, when enough of the Sun is covered:
- The light goes strange. Not dimmer exactly, but thinner and more silvery, as if the world were lit through a filter. Shadows grow unusually sharp, because the Sun has become a thin crescent rather than a disk.
- Crescent shadows appear. Look at the dappled light under a leafy tree, or through a colander: every gap acts as a pinhole and projects dozens of little crescent Suns on the ground.
- The temperature drops and a breeze often picks up as the Sun's heat fades.
- The horizon darkens in the west, where the Moon's shadow is racing toward you.
The final minute — shadow bands, beads, and the diamond ring
In the last minute or two before totality, everything accelerates:
- Shadow bands — faint, rippling bands of light and shadow, like sunlight on the bottom of a swimming pool — sometimes shimmer across pale surfaces. They are elusive; lay out a white sheet to catch them.
- Baily's beads — the last of the sunlight shining through valleys on the edge of the Moon breaks into a string of brilliant beads.
- The diamond ring — the beads merge into one final, dazzling point of light against the emerging ring of the corona. It is breathtaking, and it is your last cue: as it fades, totality begins.
Totality — the main event (under 2½ minutes in Spain in 2026)
The instant the diamond ring winks out, it is safe to take your eclipse glasses off, and you should, immediately — otherwise you will miss everything:
- The corona — the Sun's pearly-white outer atmosphere — blazes silently around the black disk of the Moon, streaming out in delicate structures. No photograph fully captures it.
- The chromosphere and prominences — a thin rim of pink, and occasional loops of red plasma — may show at the Moon's edge.
- The sky becomes deep twilight. Bright planets and stars come out. A 360° sunset glows all around the horizon, because you are looking out of the edge of the Moon's shadow in every direction.
- The world reacts. Birds roost, crickets start, the temperature sits at its lowest, and a hush tends to fall over any crowd.

Third contact to the end — the eclipse in reverse
A second diamond ring flares on the opposite edge as the Sun reappears — the signal to put your glasses back on at once. Then the whole sequence runs backwards: the beads, the strange light, the crescent shadows, the returning warmth, and finally, about an hour later, the Moon slips off the Sun's far edge at fourth contact and the eclipse is over. Most people, at that point, are already asking when and where the next one is.
