1. The short version
skyalert.io is a free site that tells you when sky events (eclipses, meteor showers, full moons) are happening and lets you set reminders. We collect the minimum needed for that to work: an email or phone if you sign up for reminders, anonymous analytics if you accept analytics cookies, and basic logs your browser sends every site (IP, user-agent). We do not sell your data. We do not buy data brokers' profiles to enrich it. If you never set a reminder and reject analytics cookies, we hold no identifying information about you.
2. What we collect, and why
2.1 Reminder subscriptions
If you tap "Remind me" on an event, you give us an email address (and optionally a phone number) so we can send you a notification before that event. Reminders are powered by beep.me, which stores the address and the event you subscribed to. Each reminder email includes an unsubscribe link. You can request deletion at any time by replying to a reminder or emailing us.
2.2 Analytics
If you accept analytics cookies in the consent banner, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to count visits, see which countdown pages are most viewed, and learn whether new content is reaching readers. GA4 runs with IP anonymisation and we do not enable advertising features. If you decline, no analytics scripts load. You can change your choice any time via the cookie banner.
2.3 Server logs
Our hosting provider (Microsoft Azure, EU region) keeps standard access logs for 30 days. These contain IP, request path, user-agent, and HTTP status. We use them to investigate errors and abuse. They are not joined with reminder or analytics data.
2.4 Location-aware features
City pages (e.g. "Eclipse from Valencia") are geographic content, not geolocation: we do not request your GPS. We may show a list of nearby cities based on a non-precise IP-to-region lookup; this happens server-side and is not stored.
3. Cookies
- Necessary — remember your cookie consent choice and language preference. Always on.
- Analytics (optional) — _ga, _ga_* (GA4). Set only if you accept analytics in the banner.
- Advertising (optional) — Google AdSense and Impact tracking pixels. Set only if you accept advertising in the banner. Disabled by default in EU/UK/EEA.
4. Third parties we use
- beep.me — reminder delivery (email + SMS). Operated by EPAK Vibes.
- Google Analytics — visit counts. Optional.
- Google AdSense — display ads. Optional. Personalised ads are off when consent is denied.
- Microsoft Azure (EU) — hosting and database.
- Open-Meteo, USNO, NASA, IMO — sky and cloud-cover data sources. They never receive your personal data.
5. Your rights (GDPR / UK GDPR)
You can ask us to: confirm what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, restrict processing, or export it. The easiest path is to reply to any reminder email — that thread is your subscription, and we can delete it on the spot. For any other request, email hola@skyalert.io. We respond within 30 days. You may also lodge a complaint with your national data-protection authority.
6. Children
Reminders are not directed at children under 13. If a parent learns their child has subscribed, email us and we will delete the subscription immediately.
7. Changes
If we materially change this policy, we will update the "Last updated" date above and, for subscribers, send a notice with the next reminder. Trivial wording fixes happen without notice.
