The Lyrids meteor shower peaks from Nairobi around Apr 22, with up to 18 meteors per hour under ideal conditions. In 2026 a half moon will wash out fainter meteors, and from Nairobi the radiant in Lyra climbs to 55° above the north horizon around 04:35. Local best viewing window: 00:45–05:15 EAT on the peak night, about 4.5 hours of astronomical darkness. Scaled to that altitude, the 18/hour headline figure works out to roughly 15 meteors an hour from Nairobi under a genuinely dark sky. Tonight: limited visibility; a site a short drive away may do better.
