The most important piece of stargazing equipment is not a telescope — it is a dark sky. Under heavy light pollution even a good telescope shows little, while under a truly dark sky the naked eye reveals the Milky Way, meteor showers and thousands of stars. Here is how to find darkness and make the most of it.

What light pollution does

Artificial light scatters in the atmosphere and creates skyglow — that dull orange dome you see over any town at night. Skyglow raises the brightness of the whole sky, and anything fainter than the background simply vanishes: faint meteors, the Milky Way, nebulae, and the subtle detail in star clusters. From a city centre you might see a few dozen stars; from a dark rural site, several thousand.

Light pollution has grown steadily as outdoor lighting has spread, which is why most people alive today have never seen a truly dark sky. The good news is that darkness is often closer than you think.

The Bortle scale

Astronomers rank sky darkness on the Bortle scale, from 1 to 9:

3 Rural Milky Way detailed; faint meteors easy
4 Rural/suburban transition Milky Way visible but washed near horizon
5 Suburban Milky Way faint or lost; only brighter meteors

8–9 City Only the Moon, planets and brightest stars

For meteor showers and the Milky Way you really want Bortle 4 or better. Each step darker roughly doubles what you can see.

Finding a dark site

  • Use a light-pollution map. Interactive maps (such as those built on the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness) colour-code darkness so you can spot the nearest dark zones — often just beyond the suburbs, or on the far side of a hill from town.
  • Put terrain between you and the glow. A ridge, forest or valley that hides a town's lights makes a big difference even at moderate distance.
  • Favour higher, drier spots. Less haze and moisture means a more transparent sky. Coastlines and mountains often have darker skies than inland plains near cities.
  • Consider certified Dark Sky Places. Organisations such as DarkSky International certify reserves and parks that protect their night skies; these are reliably excellent.

The Moon is light pollution too

Even in a perfectly dark location, a bright Moon floods the sky with light and hides faint objects. For deep-sky and meteor watching, plan around the Moon: aim for the week either side of new moon, or for hours when the Moon has set. Protect your night vision

Getting to a dark site is wasted if you keep blinding yourself. Night vision takes 20–30 minutes to build and a second to lose:

  • Use a red torch, or your phone's red-light mode, and keep it dim. Red light barely affects dark adaptation.
  • Avoid looking at white phone or car screens. If someone arrives with headlights on, close your eyes until they are off.
  • Be patient. The sky you see after half an hour of proper dark adaptation is a different, far richer sky than the one you saw when you arrived.
