"What telescope should I buy?" is the wrong first question. Plenty of keen beginners spend a lot on a telescope, fight with it twice, and leave it in a cupboard. The right first question is what do you want to see — and for most people, the best first instrument is a pair of binoculars, not a telescope.
Why binoculars first
Binoculars are cheaper, need no setup, survive being thrown in a bag, and — because you use both eyes and see the sky the right way up — are far more intuitive than a telescope. They dramatically upgrade naked-eye stargazing:
- The Moon's craters and mountains along the terminator (the light/dark line).
- The four bright moons of Jupiter, visibly shifting position night to night.
- Rich star clusters like the Pleiades, and the hazy glow of the Andromeda galaxy — 2.5 million light-years away, and visible from a dark site.
- Sweeping fields of the Milky Way, and a far better meteor-shower experience when you want to inspect a patch of sky.
For astronomy, the classic recommendation is 7×50 or 10×50 binoculars. The first number is magnification; the second is the aperture (front lens diameter) in millimetres. A 50 mm aperture gathers plenty of light, and 7–10× is low enough to hold reasonably steady by hand. Higher magnifications need a tripod to avoid a shaky, disappointing view. Aperture matters more than magnification
The most common beginner trap is buying by the "525× magnification!" printed on a cheap box. Ignore magnification claims. The number that matters is aperture — the diameter of the main lens or mirror — because that is what determines how much light the instrument collects and how much genuine detail it can show. A big, sharp, bright image at 80× beats a dim, mushy blur at 525× every time. As a rough ceiling, useful magnification tops out around 2× the aperture in millimetres, and the sky's steadiness usually limits you well below that.
When a telescope makes sense
Move up to a telescope when you know you want to see more than binoculars can show — the rings of Saturn, cloud bands on Jupiter, the phases of Venus, and fainter galaxies and nebulae. The main families:
- Refractors use lenses. Small ones are grab-and-go and low-maintenance; larger ones get expensive fast.
- Reflectors (Newtonians) use mirrors and give the most aperture for the money — the best bang-for-buck for deep-sky viewing.
- Dobsonians are Newtonian reflectors on a simple, stable rocker mount. For a first telescope, a Dobsonian is very widely recommended: a lot of aperture, easy to point, and hard to get wrong.
The mount matters as much as the optics. A wobbly mount ruins an otherwise good telescope, because at high magnification every tremor is magnified too. A stable mount you will actually use beats a fancy one you fight with.
What not to buy
- Department-store telescopes sold on huge magnification numbers and flimsy tripods. They are the single biggest reason beginners give up.
- More magnification as a goal in itself. See above.
- The biggest telescope you can afford, if it is so heavy you will not carry it outside. The best telescope is the one you actually use.
A sensible path
Start with 10×50 binoculars and a good star map or a planetarium app. Learn a few constellations, find Jupiter's moons and the Andromeda galaxy, and get a feel for the sky. If you find yourself out every clear night wanting more, step up to a small Dobsonian. You will make far better decisions about a telescope once the sky is familiar — and you will still use the binoculars for the rest of your life.
